Fish oil reduces inflammation, causing relief in symptoms, prevention of chronic disease and aids in neurological development.

Why fish oil?

Fish oil contains omega 3 fatty acids that our bodies need to be healthy.  Omega 3 fats are categorized as essential fatty acids which mean that it is a nutrient that  our body cannot make on its own.  The most bio-available form of omega 3 fatty acids comes from fatty fish living in cold waters.

What’s wrong with omega 6 fats?

Ideally, our bodies need both omega 6 and omega 3 fats, but in correct proportion.  Since most of our diets have grains included in them, omega 6 fats are easier to come by.  The ideal ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids lies around 2:1 to 1:1.  Most Americans eat a diet consisting of 20:1 omega6:omega3 ratio.  This imbalance is a major contributor to inflammation and lifestyle related disease in our society.

What happens when omega fatty acid balance is lost?

When we eat a diet in which omega 6’s dominate, we become inflamed.  People on these diets experience symptoms such as pain, flu like symptoms, lowered immunity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s, hypercholesterolemia and subluxations.

Where else are omega 3 fatty acids found?

Omega 3 fatty acids are found in green leafy vegetables, flax and wild game that eats green leafy vegetables.  This is why grass-fed beef is another good choice for your diet.  Most of our beef that we get at the grocery store is fed grain for most of its life.  When it lands on our plate it is riddled with omega 6’s.  You can find great grass fed beef at Fleisher’s in Kingston and through local farms.

How do I restore this balance?

Omega 3 supplementation is by far the easiest action you can take.  Find a high quality fish oil supplement with a stringent purification process.  Our office endorses and sells Nordic Naturals fish oil.  We find supplementing with fish oil is a small action you can take that can reap huge benefits.

What populations need omega 3’s?

Most of our population is deficient in omega 3.  Perhaps the most important population that needs omega 3 supplementation is pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding.  Omega 3 fats contribute to proper growth and development of the nervous system, a critical component in the growing fetus and infant.

Why not just eat more fish?

In America today, eating a diet high in fish is rather uncommon and can be hazardous to your health.  Many Americans have an aversion to eating fish or have problems with taste, freshness or quality.  While our major supermarkets have frozen fish available, many times these fish are farm raised or grain fed.  Farm raised and grain fed fish are not as nutritious as wild fish, because their diet consists mainly of inflammatory grains.  Grains have omega 6 fatty acids and since the farmed fish eat only grain, they are devoid of the omega 3 fatty acids.  Wild caught fish are the best source of omega 3 fatty acids.  These fish eat the green plant life in the ocean and therefore have a higher content of omega 3 fatty acids that is essential in our body.  Unfortunately, many fish swim in waters that are polluted with toxins like mercury.  As a result these toxins get into the fish’s tissues and then are consumed.
